The challenges posed by the SARS-CoV-2 virus are global, but the opportunities vary greatly from country to country. While 142,000 corona tests are performed daily in Germany (ZEIT ONLINE, 5 May 2020), there are only a few laboratories in Africa that have the analytical capabilities for a diagnosis at all. In view of the 1.2 billion people on the continent, this is an alarming sign. "We urgently need to take precautions before it is too late," warned Matshidiso Moeti, Director of Africa at WHO. German Development Minister Dr. Gerd Müller also emphasized the importance of monitoring for a global control strategy: "We can only stop the spread of corona together - at home and throughout the world."
